What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is the standard placeholder text used in the printing, typesetting, and design industries. It is scrambled Latin that has been used since the 1500s as dummy text to demonstrate the visual form of a document without the distraction of meaningful content.

A short history

The text traces back to Marcus Tullius Cicero's philosophical work De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC. In the 1500s an unknown printer took a sheet of Cicero's text and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. The passage survived into the digital age when desktop publishing software bundled it as default placeholder text, and it has remained the universal filler ever since.

Why is it used in design?

Designers use Lorem Ipsum so clients and stakeholders focus on the visual layout — typography, spacing, hierarchy — rather than reading the words. Real-looking text can be misread as final copy, which can derail a review.
